David Warren Green

Farmhouse with cows grazing in a fenced pasture surrounded by rolling green hills and a winding river

June 13, 1954-June 2, 2026

David was born in Raton, New Mexico and raised on the family ranch high on a hill between Des Moines and Folsom, New Mexico. An idyllic and picturesque landscape looking directly at Sierra Grande and Capulin Volcano, but also a lifestyle that demanded responsibilities at an early age. David attended Des Moines Public Schools where in his high school years he was an outstanding athlete excelling in basketball and baseball. His basketball team won the District Championship and qualified for the State Tournament. He attended Texas Tech University and received an Architectural Engineering Degree and began his professional career in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After a short tenure with Summit Engineering, he formed his own company, Architractors and immediately began a career doing projects all over northern New Mexico. Over four decades as both an architect and a General Contractor, David gained a reputation for high quality work and client satisfaction. One of his projects was featured in Su Casa magazine where his clients exclaimed that ” Mr. Green was an absolute godsend “! Even more than his dedication to his work he was extraordinarily concerned and committed to his employees. In addition to his professional career David also continued working and raising cattle, for a time owned racehorses, and developed a passion for golf and all forms of friendly wagering. He was a huge New Mexico Lobo basketball fan, season ticket holder and attended the Conference Tournament almost every year. One of his most cherished associations was his membership at Four Hills/Canyon Club Country Club. He reveled in his many friendships with fellow members and staff, loved the annual Member/Guest Tournament and again the opportunity for a friendly wager. He made the shot heard around Albuquerque when he recently made an albatross! As a person David was kindhearted, generous, and considerate of all with whom he interacted. His family marveled at his endless recollections and historical knowledge. He dearly loved New Mexico and took great pride in his State. He loved food and drink, was an excellent cook and could prepare a wide array of dishes. When ordering at a restaurant he was known to be very specific about how he wanted his food prepared.

David was preceded in death by his parents Howard and Ramona Green of Roanoke, Texas. Survivors are life partner, Sherry Annan, Albuquerque, New Mexico, brothers John Green and wife Donna, Trophy Club, Texas, Paul Green and wife Borden, Roanoke, Texas, nephew Joshua Green and wife Ali, Erie, Colorado and great nieces Eva and Joelle, Erie, Colorado.

His passions extended beyond his professional life. Jimmie’s heart was in the great outdoors, especially in riding horses and embracing cowboy culture. He delighted in cruising around town and through the countryside, nurturing his appreciation for simpler, quieter moments. Mary Jernigan Maulsby

Mary Jernigan Maulsby, age 85, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2026, in Amarillo, Texas.

Mary was born on November 15, 1940, to Arthur and Irma (Rock) Jernigan and was raised on the family ranch in Amistad, New Mexico. From a young age, she was known for an exceptional work ethic—one that began alongside her father, Arthur. Whether on horseback or driving a tractor, Mary was always by his side, never limiting herself to simply “helping,” but fully sharing in the work. As the oldest of five girls, she also assumed responsibility at home, assisting her mother and sisters with whatever needed to be done.

A favorite family story reflects the grit that defined Mary’s life. As a young girl, she once asked her father if she could go with him to feed the cows. He told her she could—so long as she didn’t cry, famously telling her, “Cowgirls don’t cry.” Mary took those words to heart. They became a guiding principle throughout her life: no complaining, no excuses—just pull your boots up and do the work that needs to be done.

Mary graduated from Amistad High School and later attended New Mexico State University. While there, she met Richard Maulsby of Clayton, New Mexico, and the two were married on June 27, 1959. Together, they ranched near Amistad and raised four children.

In addition to assisting Richard on the ranch, Mary began a long career with the local school system. She first worked at the Amistad school before later moving to Clayton High School, where she served as the high school secretary. True to her nature, Mary often stepped into multiple roles as needed and became a trusted presence for students, faculty, and staff alike. She was, and remains, fondly remembered by the many students who passed through the halls of both schools.

In 2000, Mary and Richard retired from ranching and the school system and moved to Clovis, New Mexico. Never one to remain idle, Mary continued working as a secretary for her son-in-law, Max Best, until her retirement in 2019.

Mary was a fierce and devoted supporter of her children, rarely missing a basketball game, leadership event, or stock show. With video camera in hand, she captured countless memories while offering unwavering encouragement from the sidelines. Her legacy of capability, independence, loyalty, and tireless work ethic lives on through her family and all those who were fortunate enough to know her.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Maulsby; her parents, Arthur and Irma Jernigan; and her sisters, Barbara Campsey and Florence Hall.

She is survived by her children: Gizelle (Brent) Ward of Logan, New Mexico; Shelly (Jimmy) Labrier of Amarillo, Texas; Sherry (Max) Best of Clovis, New Mexico; and Paul Maulsby of College Station, Texas, sisters: Carolyn Hall of Katy, TX, Helen Tixier (Adrian) of Rio Rancho, NM. She is also survived by eight grandchildren: Brandon (Teala) Ward of Princeton, Illinois; Jordan (Amberly) Ward of Clayton, New Mexico; Haley (T.J.) Rosson of Lubbock, Texas; Riley Porter of Empire, Colorado; Conner (Chandler) Best of Dallas, Texas; Corbin (Megan) Best of Dallas, Texas; Anna (Andrew) Scamardo of Iola, Texas; and Sydney Maulsby of Los Fresnos, Texas; and eleven great-grandchildren: Harper and Peyton Ward, Emersen Beiland, Kobyn Ward, Jack and Mattie Rosson, Whit and Pierce Best, Charlie and Annie Best, and Ace Scamardo.

She is also survived by her brother-in-law, Gene Maulsby of Dalhart, Texas, and her sister-in-law, Jane Austin of Amarillo, Texas.

Donald Joe Butler “Donny” was born May 13, 1949, in Culver City, California, just before the family moved to Clayton, New Mexico, where he spent his childhood. He attended college for two years before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1971 and serving a tour in Vietnam, where he earned the Combat Infantry Badge, the Air Medal, and a Bronze Star for his valor in combat. In 1981—what he called the best year of his life—Donny met the love of his life, Loretta Heringa. Two years later, their daughter Jami was born, followed soon after by their son Brett.
When the children were young, he was a co-owner of the Eklund Hotel for five years where he enjoyed serving food, pouring drinks, and visiting with the customers. After his retirement, Donny and Loretta moved to Raton in 2010 to help her mother run the Cross Diamond Ranch.
Donny enjoyed good times with friends, listening to music, and relaxing on the beach in Mexico. He loved his grandchildren, his children, and wife with all his heart. He died at home, peacefully surrounded by his loving family and his dog.
